Featured Article ----------------------------------------------------------------- THE TEN BIGGEST PUBLIC SPEAKING MISTAKES... AND HOW TO AVOID THEM by Allan Kaufman, DTM 1. Not making a good first impression. 2. Not being prepared. 3. Not being enthusiastic. 4. Not knowing how to write and deliver an organized presentation. 5. Not staying within your allotted time frame. 6. Not knowing how to effectively use eye contact, gestures, and body language. 7. Not using vocal variety. 8. Not using visual aids. 9. Not using humor. 10. Not overcoming your fear of public speaking. In this issue, we'll examine the first three Public Speaking mistakes. Mistake #1: NOT MAKING A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION It's important to dress equal to or even better than your audience. Why? You'll establish rapport, increase your credibility, and they'll take you seriously. If your audience is dressed in corporate business attire you should wear a suit, sport coat and tie, dress, or dress suit. Read John T. Molloy's books: Dress for Success or The Woman's Dress for Success Book. Also to make a good first impression, walk confidently to the lectern, shake hands with the person who introduces you, then address your audience. Mistake #2: NOT BEING PREPARED OR NOT GIVING THE IMPRESSION THAT YOU'RE PREPARED Preparation has at least two parts -- developing your presentation skills and gathering the content for your presentation. If you develop your presentation skills now, well in advance of a sudden need or desire to give a presentation, then you can invest most of your time on developing content. Be prepared and do your homework. Research what you're going to say, write it down or at least prepare an outline, and most importantly, practice... practice... practice! If you're not prepared, don't give your presentation, especially if you're getting paid for the engagement! If you're not getting paid, if you don't have the time to prepare, and if you're sufficiently skilled in the basics of public speaking, do the best that you can with what you know. In any case, don't apologize for not being prepared or make excuses and then deliver your presentation. You'll only program your audience for your failure. If your audience doesn't expect you to fail, they'll be supportive and may not know that you're not prepared, especially if you have well-developed, basic presentation skills. Mistake #3: NOT BEING ENTHUSIASTIC. Enthusiasm can make up for a great deal of weaknesses. If you're not excited about your topic, get another topic or find something about that topic for which you can develop enthusiasm. Show your audience that you're excited about what you're sharing with them. Talk fast and demonstrate a high energy level. In the next issue... Public Speaking Mistakes #4, #5, and #6. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2. No Sweat Speaking(sm) Tip (Reducing Performance Anxiety) ----------------------------------------------------------------- PSYCH YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS by Allan Misch, DTM One way to reduce performance anxiety is to program yourself, or psych yourself up, for a successful presentation. You do this through mental imagery as part of your practice routine or just before you fall asleep. Here's how I do it and how you can do it. Close your eyes and picture in your mind's eye where you'll be speaking. Imagine the introducer introducing you. See yourself confidently walking to the lectern, and hear your audience applaud you. Experience a successful presentation in as much detail as possible. Hear and see your audience applauding you as you end your presentation. See yourself walking confidently back to your seat. Bask in your feeling of confidence. Do this exercise a few times. Your brain will act like a video camera, recording your imagined experience. When you're ready to present, your brain will replay "the videotape." How you feel in your real experience will mirror to a degree how you felt in your imagined experience. So what you've done is psych yourself up for success. ----------------------------------------------------------------- "In minutes you were able to do for the audience what some people have been trying to do for themselves for a lifetime. You two helped audience members get rid of the fear of public speaking right before my very eyes.... Any organization can benefit greatly by witnessing your seminar.... You two are a great team!" Craig Valentine Toastmasters International 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking ----------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Presentation Skills Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- SHOULD YOU WRITE YOUR OWN INTRODUCTIONS? by Allan Kaufman, DTM YES... YES... YES! That way, you won't be surprised. It's likely the person introducing you won't know how to give an effective introduction... or will be anxious in front of an audience... or will be anxious and ineffective. Either way, you can be certain that you won't get the proper set-up for delivering your presentation. So what can you do? You can take control of the introduction process. Write out your own introduction. Type it double-spaced in at least 14 point type. Make four or five copies of it. Send one in advance to the person who'll introduce you. Call your introducer to ensure that s/he's received it. Ask if s/he has any questions. Take two copies with you in case your introducer forgets to bring it or there's a substitute introducer. Save at least one copy for your reference file. Always be prepared. One way to do that is to write your own introduction and control the introduction process. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *** Great Speaking Resource *** Turn your speaking, training, or sales skills into cash. Stealth Communication(sm) Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- Stealth Communication(sm) is communication that bypasses the conscious mind and communicates with the subconscious. Stealth Communication(sm) is fast, can't be seen or heard by the conscious mind but consistently hits its target-- the subconscious. GREAT SPEAKING IS ABOUT MANAGING YOUR AUDIENCE'S EMOTIONAL STATE by Allan Misch, DTM If you want to be effective on the platform, you need to put your audience in the right frame of mind, or mental state, to accept your message. For example, if you're trying to influence your audience to use your products or services, you need to get them into an excited, motivated, and/or desirous mental state. How do you do that? You do that by first getting into that state yourself. Imagine everyone in your audience becoming your client. Talk faster in an excited tone of voice. Ask them if they ever bought something that they got real excited about. Ask them how that felt. Then, weave stories into your presentation that elicit the desired mental states. By managing your audience's mental states, you will be more effective, influential, and powerful. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *** Hot Internet Business Secrets *** Over 1,000+ PAGES of the Hottest, Proven Profitable Internet Business Secrets Broken down Into An EASY-TO-DUPLICATE System! Humor Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- LEARN HOW TO THINK FUNNY by Allan Kaufman, DTM and Allan Misch, DTM Practice developing a "humor consciousness" - the ability to see the humorous side of everything. How do you do this? Go to the library. Take out videos, CDs, and cassette tapes of comedians. Listen to them. If you hear a joke or story you like, write it down. Learn it and practice it. Buy humor books, lots of them. Any books you can get by Larry Wilde will enhance your ability to use humor. He's written more humor books than anyone. We own about 60 books he's written. Look him up in the library. Unfortunately, many of his books are out of print. You may want to look in stores that sell used books. Develop your own humor library on different subjects. Practice telling jokes and stories to your friends, your co-workers, even your relatives. If they laugh, then you're on track. Personalize your stories and jokes, and begin to incorporate them into your presentations. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Dear Allan and Allan (Answers to Your Questions) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Submit questions to mailto:questions@nosweatspeaking.com. Dear Allan and Allan, I'm a real estate agent and give talks on investment real estate to attract new clients. My associates have told me that I avoid looking at my audiences. I look over their heads or at the ceiling. I guess this is because I'm nervous. I'm not getting many new clients from my talks. What can I do? Nervous in New York. Dear Nervous in New York, Because you're nervous, you avoid looking at individuals in your audiences. This is a common behavior of presenters who are anxious or nervous. Unfortunately, not making eye contact with audience members tends to make a speaker more nervous. Pick out one person in the audience and talk to him for 5 to 7 seconds. Then make eye contact with another person and talk to her for 5 to 7 seconds. Continue doing this throughout your talk. Now, instead of giving a presentation to a sea of faces, you're speaking to one person at a time, and your nervousness will diminish. We bet you'll even get more clients.
