Featured Article ----------------------------------------------------------------- **The Ten Biggest Public Speaking Mistakes... and How to Avoid Them** by Allan Kaufman 1. Not making a good first impression. 2. Not being prepared. 3. Not being enthusiastic. 4. Not knowing how to write and deliver an organized presentation. 5. Not staying within your allotted time frame. 6. Not knowing how to effectively use eye contact, gestures, and body language. 7. Not using vocal variety. 8. Not using visual aids. 9. Not using humor. 10. Not overcoming your fear of public speaking. In this issue, we'll examine Public Speaking mistakes 4 through 6. Mistake #4: Not Knowing How to Write And Deliver An Organized Presentation. To be effective, all of your presentations must have at least a clearly defined opening, body, and closing. In addition, you should have transitions that lead your audience from the beginning to the end of your presentations. I'll discuss in detail the various parts of an organized speech in a future issue. Mistake #5: Not Staying Within Your Allotted Time Frame. Delivering a speech within specific time parameters is essential. Often, you're on a program with other speakers. Each speaker and aspect of the program has an allotted time limit. If you go beyond your time limit, you'll disrupt the entire program. Usually, you'll cause another speaker to have a reduced speaking time. Probably, you won't be invited back. Volunteer to speak first. That way, if someone else goes over time, it will not affect your presentation. Mistake #6: Not Knowing How to Use Eye Contact, Gestures, And Body Language Effectively. You can greatly enhance your impact by using eye contact, gestures, and body language that compliment your spoken message. Looking at your audience helps you develop a rapport with them. No one wants to listen to a speaker who has his or her eyes glued to notes. To make eye contact, pick out someone on the left side of your audience and speak to him for 5 to 10 seconds while making your point. Then look at someone in the middle of your audience and speak to her for 5 to 10 seconds. Make another point. Repeat this pattern by talking to someone on the right side of your audience. Follow this by talking to someone else in the middle of your audience and then the left side again. By using this technique, you'll seem to be talking to everyone while you're actually connecting with individuals in your audience. Similarly, using your body to gesture helps you grab and maintain your audience's attention. Move around a little and use your hands and arms naturally to compliment your points. In the next issue... No Sweat Speaking(sm) Tip (Reducing Performance Anxiety) ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Honor Your Fear to Conquer It!** by Allan Misch Some people blame themselves for having public speaking fear and anxieties. They think there's something wrong with them, and they avoid public speaking opportunities. The truth is before you can solve a problem you must first own up to it. Before you can conquer your speaking fear, you must first acknowledge that you have it and that you're still a good person even though you have it. In our No Sweat Speaking(sm) process for eliminating public speaking fear and anxiety, Allan and I use a positive affirmation that helps those with whom we work prepare for changing their behavior from fear to confidence. Try saying, "Even though I have this speaking fear, I still accept myself for who I am." This affirmation tells your mind that you have a problem, and that you're still okay in spite of it. It causes you to honor your problem and yourself. Once you do this, you begin to prepare yourself mentally and emotionally to conquer your fear. ----------------------------------------------------------------- "In minutes you were able to do for the audience what some people have been trying to do for themselves for a lifetime. You two helped audience members get rid of the fear of public speaking right before my very eyes.... Any organization can benefit greatly by witnessing your seminar.... You two are a great team!" Craig Valentine Toastmasters International 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking ----------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Presentation Skills Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Some Things You Have to Memorize** by Allan Misch The two most important parts of your presentation are the opening and closing. The opening gets your audience to want to listen to you. The closing gets them to remember your message, or to take action. You should know both like you know the "back of your hand." Memorize them and practice delivering them flawlessly. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *** Great Speaking Resource *** Turn your speaking, training, or sales skills into cash. Stealth Communication(sm) Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- Stealth Communication(sm) is communication that's fast, can't be seen or heard by the conscious mind but consistently hits its target -- the subconscious. **Speak Their Language!** by Allan Misch Here's a powerful way to establish rapport with your audience to get them to trust you and like you . . . SPEAK THEIR LANGUAGE! Learn their lingo, the industry-specific and organization- specific words that they use. When you use these words, your audience members' subconscious minds will say, "I like this speaker. S/he sounds like me." Humor Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Humor You Don't Have to Sweat For** by Allan Misch This will work like a charm every time you use it. Talk to the meeting chairperson and some attendees before the event. Ask them if the group has an "in joke" or something the group knows that is funny to the group. Work it into the beginning of your presentation. You'll get an instant laugh, establish powerful rapport, and own that audience. As an example, I was the keynote speaker at an association's annual luncheon banquet. I found out that one of their long-time board members, Kenny Klunk (name changed to protect the guilty), rarely attended a meeting. They joked about this all of the time. After the chairman introduced me, I said: "Before I get started, I want to know one thing . . . is Kenny Klunk here? People laughed so hard they were choking on their food. They were stomping their feet. They were whistling. After that, the audience was mine. So use this technique. You'll get a great laugh and you won't have to sweat for it. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 6.
