Not making a good first impression. 2. Not being prepared. 3. Not being enthusiastic. 4. Not knowing how to write and deliver an organized presentation. 5. Not staying within your allotted time frame. 6. Not knowing how to effectively use eye contact, gestures, and body language. 7. Not using vocal variety. 8. Not using visual aids. 9. Not using humor. 10. Not overcoming your fear of public speaking. In this issue, we'll examine Public Speaking Mistakes #10 plus BONUS Mistake #11. Mistake #10: Not Overcoming your Fear of Public Speaking Most people have a fear of public speaking. Surveys indicate it is the number one fear. One way to reduce it is to present as often as possible and hope to desensitize your fear. Additionally, you should take a public speaking course or join Toastmasters International. Becoming a confident speaker is like learning to play the piano. You must learn the basics. You must practice and then practice some more. It's worth it. Because those who can communicate effectively get the best jobs, make the most money, and in general, are happier and more satisfied. But the absolute best and fastest way to kill those butterflies is to experience No Sweat speaking(sm). Go to http://www.nosweatspeaking.com to learn about our programs for your group or one-on-one coaching for you. We like to give more than our audience expects, so here's a BONUS... Mistake #11: Not Making Your Use of Notes as Inconspicuous as Possible It's okay to use notes, but there is a right way, let's call it the professional look, and there's the other way that quickly identifies you as an amateur. Here's how to look like a pro: 1. Type your notes on one side of the page. Double or triple space them. Keep one thought to a paragraph. Underline in red the key phrase in each paragraph. Put a page number top, right on each page. Don't staple the pages together -- use a paper clip. 2. At the lectern, place page 1 on the left and the rest of your pages (2, 3, 4, etc.) on the right with page 2 on top. Begin your speech. You now have pages 1 and 2 in front of you. 3. As you finish page 1, immediately look at page 2. While beginning page 2, slide page 2 to the left on top of page 1. Now you have pages 2 and 3 in front of you. When you're finished page 2, immediately look at page 3, and slide page 3 on top of page 2, revealing page 4. Continue this process until you're finished. Using this technique, your audience should never see your notes during your presentation. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *** Check This Out! *** "It's Bad Enough That Most Public Speakers Are Knee-Knocking Scared; Even Worse, Most Are Deathly Dull! You Don't Have to Be One of Them." http://www.instantspeakingsuccess.com ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2. No Sweat Speaking(sm) Tip (Reducing Performance Anxiety) ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Watch What You Eat -- It'll Make You Nervous** by Allan Misch What you eat and drink may have strong negative effects on your performance. Caffeinated beverages cause the blood vessels in your throat to carry less oxygenated blood to your throat and vocal cords. This negatively affects your voice's power and pitch. Often, this is the root of the anxiety that some speakers have about how the audience will perceive them. Room temperature water is the safest beverage to drink. Some foods cause your mouth to become very dry, and is often the real cause of "cotton mouth" -- when your tongue seems to stick to the roof of your mouth and it's difficult to speak. When this happens, you may become nervous and anxious. Avoid processed foods, fast-foods, gravies, sauces, and any foods that end in "ate" or "ite." Before speaking, eat lightly -- salads (without dressings), bread, fresh fruit, and other light and natural foods. So eat healthy and drink plain water. Remember, what you eat can make you nervous. ----------------------------------------------------------------- "In minutes you were able to do for the audience what some people have been trying to do for themselves for a lifetime. You two helped audience members get rid of the fear of public speaking right before my very eyes.... Any organization can benefit greatly by witnessing your seminar.... You two are a great team!" Craig Valentine Toastmasters International 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking ----------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Presentation Skills Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- ** Practice, Practice and Practice ** by Allan Kaufman You heard this many times, "Practice, practice and then practice some more," or "Practice makes perfect." There's a lot of truth in these sayings. How many times have you heard or seen a presenter in front of an audience and you know that s/he didn't practice enough. One of two things probably happened: (1) Either the speaker thought s/he could wing it; or (2) The speaker gave the presentation many times and felt s/he didn't need to practice. However, by not practicing, you run the risk of forgetting parts of your program. Then you get anxious or panic. You use a lot of disempowering filler words. You appear amateurish. Allan and I practice because it's important to practice even if you're an experienced presenter. Practice in front of a mirror, a friend, your dog. Videotape, or at least audiotape your talk. Then just before it's time for your speech, go over it one more time in your mind. Practice and you'll feel a lot better during and after your performance. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *** Great Speaking Resource *** Turn your speaking, training, or sales skills into cash. Stealth Communication(sm) Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- Stealth Communication(sm) is communication that's fast, can't be seen or heard by the conscious mind but consistently hits its target -- the subconscious. **Use "Brain" Language to Speak to Your Audience** by Allan Misch Our brains process information and learn through sensory based language -- visual cues (seeing), auditory cues (hearing and talking) and kinesthetic cues (feeling and sensing). Pepper your speaking programs with sensory based words: "See what I mean?" "When that happened, I felt like...." "I hear you loud and clear." When you do this, you'll speak directly to each audience member's subconscious in his or her brain language. You'll establish strong rapport, and each person will think you're speaking to him or her. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *** Hot Internet Business Secrets *** Over 1,000+ PAGES of the Hottest, Proven Profitable Internet Business Secrets Broken down Into An EASY-TO-DUPLICATE System! Humor Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- **How to "Funny-Up" a PowerPoint Presentation** by Allan Misch Adding humor to your PowerPoint or other electronic slide show is easy. Create a slide that has a humorous quote or saying such as a Murphy's Law quote or a Berraism -- a Yogi Berra quote. For example... If you were giving a presentation on the characteristics or importance of change, you could drop in a slide with the following quote from Yogi Berra: "When you come to a fork in the road, take it!" At the end of your program, you might say, "I want to leave you with this final thought. As the wise philosopher and Hall of Fame Yankee catcher, Yogi Berra once said, "It ain't over till it's over." (Show slide with quote while you're reciting quote.) Fortunately, I'm done and this program is over." So make slides with Berraisms and Murphy's Law quotes and I guarantee you'll "funny-up" your PowerPoint presentations. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Dear Allan and Allan (Answers to Your Questions) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Allan and Allan, I'm thinking of using my speaking skills to earn money, but I don't know how to begin. I am a confident speaker with fairly decent speaking skills. Mary in Maryland. Dear Mary in Maryland , Many people have skills, speaking or other skills, that they could turn into dollars. But they're not sure how to proceed. One suggestion is to make a list of things you like to do and another list of those skills you have. Then, match the two lists so that you can determine what you like to do and are good at. This is the area you want to focus on. In your case, it seems like it's the speaking field. You should determine what that means to you. Do you have a field of interest and knowledge that you want to speak on? If so, then you can build a career or your own business in this field by becoming an expert or specialist and developing your niche market. We'll be covering more on this topic in the future. So stay tuned. You also should consider joining the NSA (National Speakers Association) http://www.nsaspeaker.org/ or one of its local chapters. NSA is a professional association for speakers and other speaking industry related professionals. In NSA, you'll learn the business of speaking. "I have no idea where or how I subscribed to your newsletter, and the sad part is that I cannot say, "Thank you!" to the person who extended this blessing to me. I am a networking coach who happens to speak... but I've trained endlessly, and I've even taken an extended course at UCLA Extension in California. The course was about $500.00 and lasted 8 weeks. I've learned more from 2 of your newsletters than I learned in an 8 week course. It wouldn't be right if I did not pause to let you know that your newsletter is incredible, enlightening, informative and a real treat for many. Without a doubt, your newsletter is the best I've read to date... and I've read some good ones! Keep up the outstanding job... you are making a tremendous impact. Thank you, thank you, thank you."
