Featured Article ----------------------------------------------------------------- Editors' note: Sometimes we feature articles written by guest authors that we feel are beneficial to our readers. Because public speaking fear is a stress related emotional reaction, we believe the author's comments can be helpful in dealing with this brand of stress. **Humor: An Antidote to Stress** by Roz Trieber, MS, CHES, NFL "Stress" and "burn-out" have become household words in the 21st Century. A report to the President's Science Advisor places the cost of stress to the economy at $200 billion annually. Humor can be a powerful antidote to stress -- in the midst of changing times. The notion of moving from grin and bear it to grin and share it is captured well by George Burns, who said, "You can't help growing older, but you can help growing old." Prevent hardening of the attitude by incorporating humor and laughter into your daily life. If you stand rigidly in the face of stress, you are much easily knocked off balance. If you are flexible mentally, you are in a much better position to rock and roll with the punches that you meet along life's journey. Studies of laughter in everyday conversation have found that only 10-20 percent of laughter is in response to something humorous. The other 80-90 percent is used for social purposes like filling pauses in conversation, and conveying agreement, empathy, and support for the speaker. In other words, you have an 80-90 percent chance of getting laughs if others like you! So stop walking around looking like gloom and doom. Smile, it's the second best thing you can do with your lips! Your body will think you're happy and so will everyone else. Begin each day by standing in front of the mirror naked, give a great big smile. Point your finger at yourself and say "I love you." Laugh for 30 continuous seconds. Your immune system is now in high gear and your stress hormones have taken a nose dive. You have just had a mood altering experience. You have made the choice to have a fun filled day; a day where you regenerate the spirit of living for yourself and those around you. Need help in developing a fun attitude at work? Read funny and inspirational material fifteen minutes a day. Read the comics aloud every morning or read humorous quotations about life and pass one a day on to your co-workers. If you miss a day, your co-workers will want to know what happened to "their quote." You are now spreading positive energy. Put fun ideas in to your weekly/monthly internal newsletters. Try including reviews of local restaurants, movie reviews, a "what's happening" column with news about the funny things that happen in employees lives on and off the job. Celebrate the funniest. What can this do for your organization? Imagine raising the morale and providing recognition and appreciation for all. Appreciation is the hallmark of having FUN. Most of all, such activities express the idea that "we take our business seriously, and we take ourselves lightly." ********** Roz Trieber, MS, CHES, NFL is an inspirational Speaker, Health Educator, and Writer. No Sweat Speaking(sm) Tip (Reducing Performance Anxiety) ----------------------------------------------------------------- **What Do You Do When Your Mind Goes Blank** by Allan Misch This happens to me often for two reasons. One, I speak a lot, and two, as I get older, I get more "senior moments." You can use a few strategies to get back on track. >> Use an outline and keep it with you. Looking at key words may jog your memory. >> If you made 2 points and your mind goes blank about the 3rd point, you could say to your audience: "Based on my first 2 points, what do you think my 3rd point is?" Often they'll tell you or you've bought some extra time to regain your thoughts. >> You could be honest and tell your audience that you're having a senior moment. Everybody will laugh, your pressure to remember reduces, and you'll probably collect your thoughts. So when your mind goes blank, turn that anxious, dreadful, painful experience into a No Sweat Speaking(sm) experience. ----------------------------------------------------------------- "In minutes you were able to do for the audience what some people have been trying to do for themselves for a lifetime. You two helped audience members get rid of the fear of public speaking right before my very eyes.... Any organization can benefit greatly by witnessing your seminar.... You two are a great team!" Craig Valentine Toastmasters International 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking ----------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Presentation Skills Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- **What Do You Do When No One Asks a Question?** By Allan Kaufman During your talk, you may open it up for a question and answer session. What do you do if no one asks a question? Inexperienced speakers continue and then end their talk. Experienced presenters use a different approach. You should prepare in advance a few questions and answers. Then use one of your prepared questions this way: "A question other audiences have asked is...." Then answer it. Many people feel awkward asking the first question. When you ask the first question and answer it, you break the ice for your audience. Often, their questions will follow. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *** Great Speaking Resource *** Turn your speaking, training, or sales skills into cash. Stealth Communication(sm) Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- Stealth Communication(sm) is communication that's fast, can't be seen or heard by the conscious mind but consistently hits its target -- the subconscious. **How to Get People to Associate You with Feeling Good** by Allan Misch People buy what you're selling or saying because they trust YOU. That trust translates into credibility for your product or message. People trust you when they feel strong rapport with you. So you must get others to feel good about you. One way to do this is to anchor, or associate, in the other person's mind, feeling good to you. In other words, whenever the person sees you they feel good. Try this. When you are talking to someone, bring up a subject that makes the person feel good. When his or her mental state changes to feeling good, put a big smile on your face. If you do it right, every time that person sees you, especially if you smile, he or she will begin to feel good. This works for individuals and audiences. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *** Hot Internet Business Secrets *** Over 1,000+ PAGES of the Hottest, Proven Profitable Internet Business Secrets Broken down Into An EASY-TO-DUPLICATE System! Humor Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Keep Your Funny Stories and Jokes Short!** By Allan Kaufman Here's why you should keep your funny stories and jokes as short as possible. >> It's easier to remember them. >> Your audience won't get bored waiting for the punch line. >> Most stories and jokes are funnier and you'll get a better response when you don't take too long to reach the punch line. >> You reduce your chances of "bombing." Also, learn your stories and jokes. Memorize the punch lines, and very importantly... practice, practice, practice telling them! ----------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Dear Allan and Allan (Answers to Your Questions) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Allan and Allan, I am a high school teacher. Teaching math to my students is not a problem for me. The problem is when I have to speak to a group of adults. It could be parents or even other teachers. I panic. I start to sweat. My hands get all clammy. I forget what I want to say. What can I do to relieve this anxiety that is affecting my career? Nervous in Nevada. Dear Nervous, Your speaking anxiety is common. You have an underlying fear called peer fear. You seem comfortable speaking to people younger than you. When it comes to presenting to your associates, or to people your own age or older, that's when your anxiety kicks in. So what should you do? You can avoid speaking to groups of adults. I know this is not the correct answer, but this is what many people do. You can just suffer through it and "feel the pain." Or you can seek out a solution. I commend you for writing to us. We offer personal coaching to help people with your problem and other related speaking anxieties. Our approach involves identifying your underlying issues and then addressing each one with our No Sweat Speaking(sm) Process that we teach you.
