Featured Article ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Find Your Topic, Then Speak** by Allan Kaufman Everyone has his or her topic. You have a topic about which you are passionate and knowledgeable. This is the topic to consider creating a presentation or seminar for several reasons. 1. You may want to become well known as an "expert" in a certain subject. 2. You may be passionate about sharing information in your field. 3. You could turn your expertise into a stream of income. 4. You could train others in your field. What is your topic? Financial, relationships, spiritual, health? It's different for everyone. Our (Allan and Allan) topics are presentation skills, eliminating public speaking fear, Stealth Communication(sm), and managing with humor. After you select your topic, then you are ready to develop it by doing the following. *Write down everything you know about it.* Your own experience is a rich library of lessons learned, stories, examples, and illustrations. *Do some research.* Research the internet and/or library for additional material. *Begin by writing a short talk on it.* Gear your presentation to last between 15 minutes to 30 minutes. *Widen your scope.* Consider creating multiple modules that taken together would encompass a seminar. *Develop learning media.* Create a short booklet or pamphlet on it. *Write a book on it.* This will give you instant credibility as an expert. *Market it.* Market your seminar or incorporate it into your work or career. Once you have all the content material on your topic, use AllanSpeak(tm) to make your presentations and seminars the best they can be. What is AllanSpeak(tm)? When you first signed up as one of our subscribers, we gifted you a report "AllanSpeak 101." We suggest you reread this report, or if you are not yet a subscriber, then consider signing up for our complimentary No Sweat Speaking(sm) Ezine and two bonus reports. Remember, audiences perceive speakers and writers as experts in their fields. Audiences will listen to you if you have something to say that will benefit them, and if you say it in an interesting, attention-holding manner. The key, though, is you must have a topic that will interest, amuse and/or benefit your audience. Find your topic, do your research, develop your presentation, then give it over and over again. You may be surprised and amazed at the result. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *********************** Check This Out! *********************** ***Is Your Public Speaking Fear Holding You Back?*** Are you not getting the job you want or the promotion you deserve because you suffer from speaking anxiety? No Sweat Speaking(sm) Tip (Reducing Performance Anxiety) ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Move Around to Dissipate Nervousness** by Allan Misch When you present and become nervous, you probably tense your muscles and hold your arms close to your body. You probably clutch the lectern, clasp your hands together behind or in front of you, or put your hands in your pockets. To dissipate nervousness, try moving more. Consciously, move your hands to your sides. Raise them to gesture. Take three steps toward one side of the room and talk to your audience. After you make a point, walk to the other side and talk to your audience. You'll soon realize that your nervousness is disappearing. ----------------------------------------------------------------- "In minutes you were able to do for the audience what some people have been trying to do for themselves for a lifetime. You two helped audience members get rid of the fear of public speaking right before my very eyes.... Any organization can benefit greatly by witnessing your seminar.... You two are a great team!" Craig Valentine Toastmasters International 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking ----------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Presentation Skills Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Connect with Eye Contact** by Allan Kaufman Why make eye contact with your audience? Think about it. What if you just read your speech with your eyes glued to your notes? How about staring at the ceiling while giving your talk? Or just looking at one friendly face the whole time? Put yourself in the audience. Would these techniques help the speaker gain rapport with you? Would they help to make the presentation interesting? Would they help to put the speaker and you at ease? Probably not. So how do you develop rapport with your audience and make your presentation experience more interesting and pleasurable to your audience? Connect with effective eye contact. Here's how. Look at individuals to your left, center, and right. Focus your attention for a few seconds on each one. Pick out someone on your left and look at him or her while you are making a point. Focus your attention on that person for 5-10 seconds. Then pick out someone in the center of the audience and focus on him or her while making your next point. Then talk to someone on the right side of the audience. Look again to the center, this time focus on a different person. Continue to the left and then repeat the process. The idea is that you are speaking to individuals, not to a mass of faces. So make effective eye contact. It will help you connect with your audience. All of your audience members will feel that you are looking at them individually. They will pay close attention to you. The rapport that you establish will help you overcome some of your nervousness. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *** Great Speaking Resource *** Turn your speaking, training, or sales skills into cash. Stealth Communication(sm) Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- Stealth Communication(sm) is communication that's fast, can't be seen or heard by the conscious mind but consistently hits its target -- the subconscious. **Gifting--A Powerful Strategy for Influence** by Allan Misch If you want to influence your audience or your prospect, give them something as a gift--usually, something that's low cost but has a high perceived value. This sets up a dynamic in their subconscious that they need to reciprocate. They're more apt to accept your idea, product, or service. For example, at one of our programs, we gave several laser pointers to audience participants. At the end of the program, we sold every laser pointer that we brought with us. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *** Hot Internet Business Secrets *** Over 1,000+ PAGES of the Hottest, Proven Profitable Internet Business Secrets Broken down Into An EASY-TO-DUPLICATE System! Humor Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- ** Two Ways to Use Murphy's Law to Your Advantage** by Allan Misch First, prepare in advance humorous lines, or jokes, that you can use when things go wrong such as the sound system squeals, the lights go out, or the introducer does not use your introduction. For example, I prepared an introduction and sent it to my introducer two weeks before my program. At the venue, he said that he had the introduction. Unfortunately, he didn't use it. He introduced me by saying, "Here's Allan Misch." My response was, "After that introduction, I feel like a man who's got a firm grip on an empty bag." The audience roared. Second, prepare one or two Murphy's law overheads or PowerPoint slides that reinforce your message. For example, on a point about preparation, I used the following Murphy's Law slide: "If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something." The audience chuckled and the slide made it easy for them to recall my point, since it was associated with a Murphy's Law. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Dear Allan and Allan (Answers to Your Questions) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Allan and Allan, I have been offered a new job that entails speaking to groups. I am excited about the opportunity, but I have no experience giving presentations. It's not that I have speaking anxiety -- it's just that I need to learn public speaking skills very quickly. Any suggestions? Speechless in Seattle. Dear Speechless in Seattle, Your situation is not unusual. Unfortunately, most people have not had effective communications training. There are several things you may consider: *You could join a Toastmasters International club.* There are about 9,000 clubs worldwide - go to www.toastmasters.org to find several near you. Visit a few and join the one you like the best. At meetings, you will learn public speaking skills and even leadership skills. You won't learn public speaking skills overnight, but it's an inexpensive and good way to hone your skills over time. *You could take a Dale Carnegie Course.* This lasts about 14 weeks and is relatively expensive. *You could take a public speaking course.* Enroll in one at a local community college. *You could employ a presentation skills coach such as Allan and Allan, Inc.* We could coach you in those skill areas in which you need improvement.
