Tougher question: Are your listeners having fun? APPLICABLE When people show up to listen, we need to give them something that makes them glad they did. That means they can leave the event with the tools of positive change. Question: What are you giving people that they can use immediately in their lives? Tougher question: What are you giving that they can't wait to apply? SHARP Sharp -- opposite of dull. Sharp -- tuned in. Sharp -- clued in. Question: Do people use the word "sharp" to describe your messages? Tougher question: Do people use the word "sharp" to describe you? TOUCH Talks filled with content are critical, but emotion is vital as well. Content hits the head. Emotion hits the heart. Question: What part of your message hits the group emotionally? Tougher question: How emotional are you about the message? Any speech or presentation can be F.A.S.T. paced. Don't discount it. Most of us think, "Well, my people are too sophisticated for that," or "You don't know the situation I'm in. I have to give quarterly financial reports, how can you make that F.A.S.T.?" By being creative. If you take what everyone thinks will be dull and make it fun, you'll be a hero. ----- Paul Evans is a Professional Speaker, Personal Public Speaking Coach, author, and developer of Instant Speaking Success. No Sweat Speaking(sm) Tip (Reducing Performance Anxiety) ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Face Your Fear** by Allan Misch That doesn't mean you should present over and over again and get the same result--severe anxiety. That's akin to committing emotional suicide. What "face your fear" means is you need to honor your fear, face up to the fact that you have it. Admit it to yourself. Own it. That's the first step in getting rid of it. Once you're no longer in denial about it and you own it, then you're ready for the next step--get rid of it. If you want to find out how to do that relatively quickly, contact us at mailto:allank@nosweatspeaking.com. ----------------------------------------------------------------- "In minutes you were able to do for the audience what some people have been trying to do for themselves for a lifetime. You two helped audience members get rid of the fear of public speaking right before my very eyes.... Any organization can benefit greatly by witnessing your seminar.... You two are a great team!" Craig Valentine Toastmasters International 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking ----------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Presentation Skills Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Never Give Excuses to Your Audience** by Allan Kaufman Never give excuses. Never say, "I didn't have enough time to prepare, but here it is anyway." Your audience doesn't want to hear it. If you are not prepared, don't speak. If you must, then don't program your audience to expect a bad presentation. If you have developed your basic public speaking skills, chances are your audience won't notice the difference. Be enthusiastic and do your best. By telling your audience you didn't prepare, you are saying that you do not respect their time. Why should they waste their time listening to you! Poor speakers make excuses as a defense mechanism because they have a fear of failure. If they say they weren't really prepared or they are lousy storytellers, then if they bomb, well, the audience wasn't expecting much anyway. I was at a staff meeting at work many years ago. The office director opened the meeting by saying that she was a lousy storyteller, but she was going to tell us a story and if we had already heard it, we shouldn't say anything. Then she told us her story. It was a pretty good story. Why did she program us for her failure? It was unnecessary. It was stupid. It was a clear giveaway that she was ignorant when it comes to public speaking. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *** Great Speaking Resource *** Turn your speaking, training, or sales skills into cash. Stealth Communication(sm) Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- Stealth Communication(sm) is communication that's fast, can't be seen or heard by the conscious mind but consistently hits its target -- the subconscious. **Listen with Your Eyes** by Allan Misch What sensory channel do you use when listening? If you thought of your ears and hearing, you're right. But there are other ways to listen. One way is to listen visually--listen with your eyes. When someone speaks to you, watch his or her body language and gestures. Are they in sync with the words? If not, usually the speaker's body language will tell the real story. Look for small facial and body movements. They can mean that the person has had a shift in emotional states--a clue that can benefit you. For example, when I'm using the No Sweat Speaking process with clients or volunteers from my audience, I know when they are experiencing decreases in speaking anxiety. Their muscles relax or they breathe deeply. So don't only listen with your ears. Also listen with your eyes. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *** Hot Internet Business Secrets *** Over 1,000+ PAGES of the Hottest, Proven Profitable Internet Business Secrets Broken down Into An EASY-TO-DUPLICATE System! Humor Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- **How to Get 'Em Laughing Before You Start Your Presentation-- Strategy #1** by Allan Misch Here's a quick strategy for getting a laugh before you begin your presentation. In your interview with the meeting planner, find out if the group has an in-joke or something they consider funny. Then after you're introduced, mention the in-joke. Your audience will crack up, and you'll have 'em in the "palm of your hand" before you start your program. In the next issue, I'll give you another quick strategy for getting 'em laughing before you begin your talk. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Dear Allan and Allan (Answers to Your Questions) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Allan and Allan, I have a habit of putting my hands in my pants pockets. In a public speaking class I attended, my instructor told me not to do that. Any advice? Pockets in Pennsylvania. Dear Pockets, If you feel comfortable with your hands in your pockets, you can put them there. Just make sure your pockets are empty so that you don't distract your audience by jingling what's in your pockets. Some of the top professional speakers, put their hands in their pockets. So if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for you, as long as it's not distracting your audience or hurting the image that you want to project. On the other hand, audiences are influenced more by your non-verbal communication than by your words. So gesturing and purposeful movement will add to your effectiveness and credibility.
