No Sweat Speaking(sm) Tip (Reducing Performance Anxiety) ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Speak with Your Mouth and Your Eyes** by Allan Misch When speaking, the more sensory channels you use, the more effective you'll be at reaching your audience. So don't speak with just your mouth. Use your body and most importantly, use your eyes. Your eyes are incredibly powerful at communicating. Anxious speakers tend to look away from their audiences. However, looking at individuals in your audience has a calming effect-- calming on your audience and on yourself. So speak to one person at a time. Look directly at that person for 5 to 7 seconds. Often, the person will smile at you. Smile back. Then, look at another person for 5 to 7 seconds. Keep repeating this process. Soon, any nervousness will begin to dissipate. That's what happens when you speak with your mouth and with your eyes. ----------------------------------------------------------------- "In minutes you were able to do for the audience what some people have been trying to do for themselves for a lifetime. You two helped audience members get rid of the fear of public speaking right before my very eyes.... Any organization can benefit greatly by witnessing your seminar.... You two are a great team!" Craig Valentine Toastmasters International 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking ----------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Presentation Skills Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- **The Most Important Factor When You Present** by Allan Misch Time. Make it your friend. Be on time for your presentation, and stay on time during your presentation. When you go overtime, you show lack of respect for your audience's time and other speakers on a multi-speaker program. If your presentation is outstanding but you run over your time limit, that's what your audience and meeting planner will remember. If your presentation bombs but you end on time, your audience and meeting planner will appreciate that you didn't cause the program to run behind schedule. So how do you ensure that your program stays on time. Practice and time yourself. Your practice session should take 20% less time than you're allotted. So if you're to speak for 30 minutes, your practice session should be no longer than 24 minutes. Time can be your enemy if you exceed your limit. It can be your ally if you stay within your limit. Make time your friend. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *** Great Speaking Resource *** Turn your speaking, training, or sales skills into cash. Stealth Communication(sm) Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- Stealth Communication(sm) is communication that's fast, can't be seen or heard by the conscious mind but consistently hits its target -- the subconscious. **How to Pay a Compliment** by Allan Misch There are many ways to pay someone a compliment. Here's a powerful way that makes the recipient feel great, creates rapport, and gets your point across. The compliment has three parts. First, tell the person what you observed. Second, compliment the person and say what you appreciate. Third, ask the person to what s/he attributes the complimented behavior. The question causes the person to reflect on his or her attribute and affirm himself or herself. Here's an example. "Isabella, the quarterly sales analysis was outstanding. You outlined all the major success factors and your recommendations were right on the mark and creative. [What you observed] That's what I appreciate about you--you have great analytical skills, and you're able to come up with creative solutions that benefit us. [Compliment and appreciation] Tell me, what do you attribute your ability to?" Humor Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- **How to Get 'Em Laughing Before You Start Your Presentation-- Strategy #2** by Allan Misch In last month's issue, I reviewed strategy #1. Here's strategy #2. If you're doing an entertaining program or giving a serious presentation with an entertaining "spin," consider using a funny program title. The funny title puts the audience in a light- hearted frame of mind. It establishes a positive mood and expectation. Sometimes, it wins your audience over before you say a word. For example, Allan Kaufman gave an award-winning, short, humorous presentation called "Five-Foot-Three, That's Me." As the introducer was mentioning the title, Allan, who's 5'3" in his bare feet, walked out on the stage. The audience roared. Allan got his first laugh before he said anything. By using a funny title that was related to his program, Allan got 'em laughing before he opened his mouth and set the right expectation for the audience to enjoy his presentation. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Dear Allan and Allan (Answers to Your Questions) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Allan and Allan, When I'm speaking at the lectern, I perspire very much. My hands get wet and I can feel the perspiration on my back. My shirt gets big perspiration stains under my arms and I get very self-conscious. What can I do. Wet In Wisconsin Dear Wet In Wisconsin, The good news is that your audience can't see you perspire unless its on your face. Make sure you always wear a jacket over your shirt so your perspiration stains don't show. Drink room- temperature water to hydrate yourself. Keep a handkerchief with you and dab any perspiration from your forehead. Don't use a tissue. The tissue may leave pieces on your skin. Use the No Sweat Speaking process on the perspiration issue to permanently alleviate the problem.
