Featured Article ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Speak and Grow Your Consulting or Other Business** by Allan Kaufman How would you like to develop additional income streams and grow your consulting business by 10%, 20%, 30%, or more? In your consulting practice or other business, you have acquired years of experience, knowledge and expertise. Capitalize on this knowledgebase and increase your income by presenting seminars and writing informational reports on your area of expertise. For example, Gary has over 25 years experience in the painting and home improvement fields, and he is very good at it. He probably could double his income by sharing his knowledge and experiences with others. He could become a painting consultant. He could speak at various venues and sell time-saving, home- improvement tip sheets that he would create. As an expert, you could speak at various local organizations for a fee or for free. For example, if you are a financial planner, you could create a short presentation on "The Ten Biggest Financial Management Mistakes People Make and How to Avoid Them!" You could create and sell, or give away, a special report on the same topic. By sharing your ideas in a presentation, you establish credibility and develop a reputation as a leader in your industry. You acquire new clients, get additional referrals, and sell your knowledge. This idea could work for you whether you are a dentist, lawyer, chiropractor, financial planner, management consultant, or interior designer. Speaking in front of potential customers is your ticket for increasing your business and expanding it. Hundreds of organizations are looking for speakers. Some may even pay you. There are charitable organizations, homeowner associations, alumni groups, work groups, religious organizations, brotherhoods and sisterhoods, industry organizations, etc. These groups meet locally, regionally and some nationally. Let them know you are available to speak, and your business will grow. To do this, you will want to reduce or get rid of your speaking anxieties and develop effective communication skills. Learn how to... ~ Organize your presentation so audiences understand your message. ~ Make engaging eye contact to connect with your audiences. ~ Use gestures and movements to add impact to your messages. ~ Use humor to spice-up your presentations. ~ Use visual aids to help drive home your ideas. ~ Recognize the importance of involving your audiences. So develop a presentation and create informational reports on your area of expertise. Market them to organizations. In time, you will develop additional income streams and your consulting or other business will grow. ----------------------------------------------------------------- "In minutes you were able to do for the audience what some people have been trying to do for themselves for a lifetime. You two helped audience members get rid of the fear of public speaking right before my very eyes.... Any organization can benefit greatly by witnessing your seminar.... You two are a great team!" Craig Valentine Toastmasters International 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Presentation Skills Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Use Body Movements as Transitions** by Allan Misch Change your body position when you transition from one point to another, or from one part of your presentation to another. By changing your body position, you signal your audience that you're "moving" your presentation forward or "moving" from one idea to another. For example, at the end of your first point, walk 3 steps toward the right or left, then begin your next point to that side of the audience. Using body movements as you transition alerts your audience that you're advancing the presentation, and helps your audience to follow you. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *** Great Speaking Resource *** Turn your speaking, training, or sales skills into cash. Humor Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Three Ways to Personalize Humor** by Allan Misch Personalizing humor means making the humor part of your experience. You can do this three ways. 1. You can relate a true experience that's funny or that you embellish and make funny. 2. You can use a generic joke or story that you personalize as your experience. For example, instead of saying "These two guys were talking...." say "My cousin Herman and I were shooting the breeze...." 3. You can combine the previous two. For example, "My brother and his wife went to Hawaii on their honeymoon. [True experience] I told him to find out if the name is pronounced Hawaii or Havaii. When he got back, my brother said he got off the plane in Honolulu and said to an elderly man standing by the arrival gate, "I was wondering, do you say Hawaii or Havaii?" The guy said to me, "Havaii." I said, "Thank you." He said, "You're velcome!" [Joke] So personalize your humor by relating a funny, true experience; taking a generic joke or story and putting yourself into it; or relating a true experience and adding a personalized joke. ----------------------------------------------------------------- **If You're Looking for a Home for Your Website, iPowerWeb Makes Website Hosting Simple!** We did a lot of research on Web hosting companies and compared many of them. Dear Allan and Allan (Answers to Your Questions) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Allan and Allan, I give presentations using PowerPoint, a laptop and an LCD projector. If the projector or the laptop fails, what can I do to salvage my presentation? Wally from Waco. Dear Wally in Waco, It's always good to have Plan B when presenting. You have several options. Depending on the importance of the presentation and its associated audio-visual elements, you could have a backup laptop and projector with you. You could bring handouts of your slides and distribute them. You could carry overhead foils and ask your host in advance to provide an overhead projector for emergency purposes. Bottom line: Have Plan B, but know your presentation so well that you can give it without relying on the slide show. You'd be surprised how effective you could be and how much more attention your audience will give you.
