Featured Article ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Three Speaking No-No's** by Allan Kaufman When you present, it's better to learn in advance what behaviors you should avoid so that your presentations progress smoothly. One powerful way to learn is from other people's mistakes. So, learn from our mistakes. We gave you "The Ten Biggest Public Speaking Mistakes" in our November, 2002 through February, 2003 issues. Our Aug/Sep/Oct, 2003 issue listed five snafus, although small, that are lethal to your public speaking image. Here are three more speaking No-No's: 1. *Showing up late for your talk.* Show up way in advance so that you can check out the layout of the room and any audio-visual equipment you will be using. Make changes where necessary. Arriving early also puts your mind at ease. It gives you extra time if you run into unexpected traffic that would delay your arrival or cause you to miss the event, which is not good for your reputation. Showing up late will create stress for the person running the program. You do not want to do that if you ever want to be invited back. 2. *Not speaking in advance to the person who will be introducing you.* It is important that you speak to the person who will introduce you. Give him or her your personally created introduction, and make sure he or she understands how to introduce you. Your introducer should read your introduction word for word while looking up every once in awhile. This is still not full-proof. I remember once I gave my introduction to the person and told her to read it word for word and look up. My introduction was typed, large print, double-spaced on three pages. She read page one and then said, "Here's Allan." What happened to pages two and three? SHE IGNORED THEM. It took me the next 5 minutes to develop my credibility with the audience. My page one had a bunch of jokes on it such as our next speaker is world renown, he is in Who's Who. Just mention his name to anyone and they will say, "Who? Who? What did I learn from this? Make sure you number your introduction pages at the top right. Emphasize to your introducer to read all the pages. Clarify in advance how comfortable your introducer is with humor. If he or she is uncomfortable using humor, avoid using it in your introduction. 3. *Not grabbing your audience's attention right away.* Grabbing your audience's attention at the beginning of your presentation is very important. This establishes the tone of your talk. It brings your audience into your sphere of influence. For more on this, see our article, "How to Grab Your Audience by Their Corpuscles and Wake Them Up" in our April, 2003 ezine issue. Avoiding these NO-NO's is essential for you to have a successful presentation. ----------------------------------------------------------------- "In minutes you were able to do for the audience what some people have been trying to do for themselves for a lifetime. You two helped audience members get rid of the fear of public speaking right before my very eyes.... Any organization can benefit greatly by witnessing your seminar.... You two are a great team!" Craig Valentine Toastmasters International 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Presentation Skills Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- **How to Stop Pacing** by Allan Misch When a presenter wanders aimlessly back and forth it's a sign that he or she is nervous or getting rid of excess energy. Usually, the speaker isn't consciously aware of the pacing. Your movements should always be purposeful and in sync with your oral message. So try this. During practice sessions and just before you give your presentation, tell yourself that you will move with purpose and not pace. Open your presentation stage center. When you're ready to make your first point, take three steps stage right, and address the right side of your audience. When you get to the second point, walk three steps stage center and address your audience. Take three steps stage left when you reach your third point, and address your audience. As you transition to your close, walk three steps center stage and finish from there. Before you know it, you will automatically stop pacing and move with purpose. ----------------------------------------------------------------- *** Great Speaking Resource *** Turn your speaking, training, or sales skills into cash. Humor Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------- **Humor for the Beginner** by Allan Misch Reader's Digest is one of the best sources of humor for beginning speakers or for speakers who are unaccustomed to use humor in their presentations. For the first few years of my speaking career, I relied on Reader's Digest as my chief source for humor. It has humor on many topics. Much of the humor is anecdotal and can be customized to fit your needs. Selections also help you to reflect on your own humorous experiences. Make a note of your own anecdotes, and begin to integrate them into your programs. ----------------------------------------------------------------- **If You're Looking for a Home for Your Website, iPowerWeb Makes Website Hosting Simple!** We did a lot of research on Web hosting companies and compared many of them. Dear Allan and Allan (Answers to Your Questions) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Allan and Allan, I don't have a powerful voice. I speak quietly and often my audience of medical professionals have a hard time hearing me. This makes me anxious. I know that I would enjoy presenting more if I did not have this problem. What can I do to overcome this curse? Cursed in California. Dear Cursed, We hope you don't sell hearing aids. (Just kidding--heh, heh heh.) What you're experiencing isn't uncommon. For physiological reasons, you may speak in a quiet voice. We'd suggest that you invest in a portable PA system to amplify your voice when you present, even with a small audience. Often, people were told by care givers--family, friends, or teachers--when they were children to be quiet. Some were not encouraged to speak up or were punished for speaking up. As a result, they formed limiting beliefs about speaking and may speak in a quiet voice. If that's your problem, you should still use the PA system, but you'll need to address this issue to speak in a more audible voice and without a PA system. Our No Sweat Speaking(sm) Process can help you get rid of your problem and speak louder.
