You never know when you'll need it, but it's too late to take it out after you need it." Allan Kaufman as quoted in Baltimore Magazine ------------------------------------------------------------ *********************** Check This Out! *********************** "Public speaking and even presentations to small groups were my greatest fears and I had gone to great lengths to avoid them throughout my career. In my new company, public speaking was not something I could avoid and my speaking ability would be quickly tested. After a lot of research, I turned to Allan & Allan. Most other companies only offer skill training. What I needed was to overcome my life long fear of speaking in front of groups. The No Sweat Speaking system seemed illogical to me at first and I was skeptical. The great part about the system is that you don't have to understand it or believe that it will work. It just happens. Today I speak in front of groups, give media interviews and conduct training sessions on a routine basis. Not only is my speaking anxiety gone, but my skills continue to improve and I look forward to my next opportunity to speak. I give my highest recommendation for Allan and Allan's system. If it works for me, it can work for anyone." Thanks, Jim M. Connecticut --------------------------------- Is Speaking Fear Holding You Back, Costing You a Lot of Money? --------------------------------- Let's be honest. If you have performance anxieties, you know you need to kill those butterflies in your stomach, but you may be afraid to take the next step and/or you're not willing to invest in yourself to make it happen. One man said to us that he knows he really needs us to coach him, but he thinks he can't afford to. What he can't afford to do is do nothing and continue NOT getting promoted and continue NOT seeking better job or business opportunities because he may have to speak in front of people. This is so sad. It's especially sad when that same person will take out a $20,000 car loan on a depreciating asset. Getting rid of your speaking anxieties and developing your speaking skills are appreciating assets. They increase your value. This means once you do it, you continue to reap the rewards. One promotion leads to another one and another one, but if you don't do what you need to do to get that first promotion, you stagnate. You could be promoting your businesses and increasing your income by speaking to groups who need your products and services, but your speaking anxiety and other performance blocks are holding you back. Probably, you're reading our ezine because you have some speaking anxieties. If they're bad enough, don't you think it's time to do something about it and improve your self- confidence? How much is having a sense of confidence worth to you? Not just in your work and business life but also in your social life? Have you ever thought about being the life of the party? About being less shy? --------------- We Can Help You --------------- Using our unique No Sweat Speaking(tm) techniques, we provide personal coaching to help you get rid of your speaking anxieties in a relatively short period of time. Go to our website and complete the Coaching Inquiry Questionnaire at http://nosweatspeaking.com/coaching_inquiry.html. Completing the questionnaire doesn't obligate you or us to work together. We will assess your situation and send you a proposal about how we can assist you. It doesn't matter where you live. Featured Article ------------------------------------------------------------ **The Three "Bs" to Present Effectively** by Allan Misch "I have to give a presentation on my division's new problem tracking system to the executive staff next week. I don't know what I can say. I'm fairly new to the division and just learning about the system. My boss thought it would be a good opportunity for me to get some visibility and learn about the system. They'll think I'm incompetent. I hate giving any presentation. It turns my stomach into knots." That's part of what a coaching client, Dennis, said to me, and it got me thinking. Dennis lacked the Three "Bs." If a speaker wants to present effectively, s/he must apply the Three "Bs." - Be Fearless, Be Enthusiastic, and Be Prepared. *Be Fearless* Fear prevents skill development. It's difficult to learn and apply basic, intermediate, and advanced presentation skills when you're mostly concerned about "getting through" the presentation without stammering uncontrollably, going completely blank, or panicking. Consider how a child develops its ability to run. First, it masters getting up on all "fours." Then it learns to crawl. Feeling more confident, it stands up holding on to something. Then, it eventually lets go and teeters on two legs. Soon, it takes its first few steps. Then, it begins to walk. Finally, it picks up the pace and runs... and doesn't stop running. So you have to be able to crawl before you can run. In presenting, you have to be confident before your brain will let you concentrate fully on learning presentation skills such as how to use vocal variety, how to move with purpose, and how to handle a microphone. Fear also leaves a negative perception in the minds of your audience. This could be more devastating to your career then a lack of skill. A bad impression affects your credibility and ability to establish rapport. It puts you on the outside looking in, a place you don't want to be in. *Be Enthusiastic* The author James Baldwin said, "Fires can't be made with dead embers." You cannot convince or persuade anyone if your message lacks conviction and your presentation lacks enthusiasm. My county council was holding hearings on rezoning farm land for residential development. An attorney for the developers testified. He was well organized and presented his clients' case logically. But he delivered his presentation in a matter-of-fact tone. It lacked excitement and conviction. Next, a farmer testified. He was nervous and not well organized. But he spoke with strong conviction, sincerity, passion, and enthusiasm, urging the council not to rezone the land. In the end, the council voted not to rezone. I'm sure his enthusiastic testimony had a positive effect on the outcome. So if you don't feel enthusiastic about your presentation, find some part of it that you can get excited about. Feel that excitement and let it permeate the rest of your presentation. *Be Prepared* Preparation involves developing skills. That's your long term preparation goal. But preparation also involves learning your subject, gathering strategic information about your audience and their needs, organizing your briefing, and practicing it. Once you've replaced fear with confidence and are excited and enthusiastic about your presentation, preparation accounts for 85 percent of your presentation. Delivery accounts for the other 15 percent. Dennis lacked the Three "Bs." He suffered from fears and anxieties that manifested as public speaking fear. He wasn't enthusiastic about his upcoming speaking opportunity to leave a positive impression with his executive staff. And he was unprepared to give the briefing. He convinced his boss to postpone the briefing. With focused coaching, he was able to conquer his fear and reduce his stress. He become enthusiastic about the opportunity his boss gave him, and prepared appropriately. His briefing was a success and led to greater confidence and skill as a presenter and leader. So if you want to present effectively, apply the Three "Bs." Be Fearless. Be Enthusiastic. And Be Prepared. ------------------------------------------------------------ "Keynote was a huge success! You were right about everything--from bringing my introduction to adding humor. I ended up adding about 9 humorous things to my presentation-- I actually brought the house down with the expandable ball visual. Thanks for everything. You made all the difference." Best, Trish (Editor's Note: The expandable ball visual that Trish mentioned above is a Hoberman Sphere. During our coaching, we teach our clients how to use it as a wonderfully effective attention grabber.) "In minutes you were able to do for the audience what some people have been trying to do for themselves for a lifetime. You two helped audience members get rid of the fear of public speaking right before my very eyes.... Any organization can benefit greatly by witnessing your seminar.... You two are a great team!" Craig Valentine Toastmasters International 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking ------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Presentation Skills Tip ------------------------------------------------------------ **What is a Lectern and Why Guard It?** by Allan Kaufman The "thing" that you stand behind while delivering your presentation is called a lectern. Many people call it a podium. In the literal sense, it is not a podium. A podium is a platform that you stand on. Think of podium, podiatrist, "feet" and you'll remember this. Why guard the lectern and what does this mean anyway? Guarding the lectern means that someone is in control in front of the audience at all times. There is no "gap" in the proceedings where the audience is staring at an empty stage, an empty front-of-the-room, or an empty lectern. When you address an audience, if you are behind the lectern, in front of it or along side of it, you are still considered guarding the lectern. When you finish your presentation, wait for the next speaker or the introducer to come to the lectern. When you introduce a speaker, wait for the presenter to take control of the lectern before you return to your seat. When you "guard the lectern" (i.e., wait for the next speaker to reach the lectern), you provide a smooth transition from one speaker to another. ------------------------------------------------------------ *** Great Speaking Resource *** Turn your speaking, training, or sales skills into cash. Humor Tip ------------------------------------------------------------ **Pause Until Your Audience Stops Laughing** by Allan Kaufman After telling a humorous story or joke, pause to give your audience time to process the humor. Hold the pause until your audience stops laughing, and then continue. If you do not pause, you "step" on your lines and laughter -- your audience may not hear your next few lines or point, and they squelch their laughter to follow you. So, pause until your audience stops laughing. ------------------------------------------------------------ **If You're Looking for a Home for Your Website, iPowerWeb Makes Website Hosting Simple!** We did a lot of research on Web hosting companies and compared many of them. Dear Allan and Allan (Answers to Your Questions) ------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Allan and Allan, When I give a presentation, I've been told that I clasp my hands behind me or in front of me. I wasn't aware that I was doing this. Where should I keep my hands? Hand-tied in Honolulu. Dear Hand-tied, Apparently, you've adopted the "parade rest" and "fig leaf" positions. Both are distracting, disempowering, and do nothing to foster a positive impression. These positions are a sure sign of a nervous speaker. It's good that you're now consciously aware of the problem. The best place for your hands is at your sides. Leave them there. As you become comfortable, raise them to gesture. Return them to your sides when they aren't needed. Experience No Sweat Speaking(tm)! ------------------------------------------------------------ PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT ------------------------------------------------------------ **Don't Schedule Prostate Cancer Surgery Until You Read This!** by Allan Kaufman One out of every six men (one out of every three black men) will get diagnosed with prostate cancer. If your father or brother had it, then your chances of getting it are much higher. If your mother had breast cancer, then your risk of prostate cancer is much higher. Last summer, I spent 10 weeks at Loma Linda University Medical Center's Proton Center in Loma Linda, CA (Southern CA) (1-800-PROTONS) where I got cured of prostate cancer via proton beam therapy treatments (highly targeted radiation). I chose this treatment because it greatly minimized my chances of the 2 major side effects highly associated with most other prostate cancer treatments especially the most recommended treatment SURGERY: INCONTINENCE and IMPOTENCE. One out of every 200 men who have prostate surgery DIE ON THE TABLE, another great reason to avoid surgery. Early detection is the key: If you are a man over 50 and do not have regular PSA blood tests and an annual DRE (digital rectal exam), then you are making a BIG MISTAKE. So if you hear of anyone who just got diagnosed with prostate cancer or is a high risk for getting it, tell him to check out: www.protonbob.com, read the testimonials, buy Bob Marckini's book: You Can Beat Prostate Cancer And You Don't Need Surgery to Do It (available on the protonbob website) and then email me: allank@nosweatspeaking.com or call me (Allan: 410-363-0080) before scheduling surgery or regular radiation. He will thank you. To read my story, go to (or cut and paste to your browser): http://www.llu.edu/news/healthy/documents/ht-jan-feb07.pdf see page 3. I went on an extended vacation and got cured of prostate cancer without any major side effects. Please share this information with everyone you know. It may save his life and/or maintain the quality of the rest of his life. Please note: I am not a doctor; I am a prostate cancer survivor. Any decision you make regarding your medical treatments must be your own decision and you alone are responsible for that decision. My goal here is to help you make a more informed decision. ------------------------------------------------------------
